Greece Faces High Wildfire Risk and Heat Wave this Week

Read Time:48 Second

A cocktail of heat, dry conditions and high winds could make for a deadly combination in Greece this week

This week Greece is on high alert for wildfires, as forecasters predict dry conditions, high winds and another intense heat wave from Thursday.

According to TO VIMA, the seasonal winds that blow across Greece in the summer, known as ‘meltemi’, have arrived and will combine with the gradually rising temperatures to present perfect conditions for dangerous wildfires.

This week, Greece will see temperatures start off around 36-37 degrees Celsius and slowly edge up to 40 degrees by Thursday.

Winds will start picking up as well, starting off blowing from the northwest between 2-4 Beaufort in the mainland but 5-6 Beaufort in the Aegean sea and around Crete.

As the week progresses and temperatures increase, so will the winds, with forecasters expected them to blow from the northwest, between 5-7 Beaufort around mid-week.
